Alexandrite is rarest formed from chrysoberyl where the colour of stone depends on the type of light source. In daylight under fluorescent lights, the gem appears green and in candlelight, it can look purple-red or brownish.  These were first discovered in Russia and can be found in Sri Lanka, Brazil and East Africa. It is found in green, purple-red and orange colours and considered one of the most sacred and rarest of the chrysoberyl family. It is a June birthstone. The best ones in low weight range can be found for around $15,000 a carat and higher carat stones can be priced over $50,000 a carat.

The newest tradition is to buy the birthstone engagement ring as it feels more personal and provides a completely fresh look. For many generations the colourless diamonds are considered the ultimate stone for proposing but in the recent times, the love for coloured gemstone has grown where the Bonhams auctions price of sapphires grew 970 per cent in 10 years, rubies increased 1100 per cent, and emeralds grew 1900 percent, due to an increase in demand and limited mines resources available in earth’s crust. The colorless gems were initially valued barely more than costume jewelry but with a number of celebrity endorsements and changing trends, the younger generation or the millennials craving for the non-regular extraordinary newer color gemstone for engagement rings. 

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) expanded its coloured stone identification and origin report where it announced to provide a report on alexandrite as well.  The report mostly provides the key information like the weight, shape, colour, measurements and specifies if the stone is natural or lab-grown. Diamonds are not just for engagement rings they are attractive but very hard and resistant to damage, while; birthstones may not provide the same features.
