Alongside Malaysia and Japan, South Korea is one of the very few countries in Asia where foreigners can own land and houses in their name on a freehold. Expats can own condos in Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia. At the same time, villa ownership usually requires a land lease agreement, and expats can't usually own land in countries like Thailand or Indonesia. Villas attract higher-end clients, especially in places like Bali and Phuket. The rules vary, but condos are the simplest option for foreign ownership. 

In February 2023, Hong Kong withdrew the Buyer's Stamp Duty imposed on non-permanent residents and ended the New Residential Stamp Duty for second-time purchasers. The government also relaxed the loan-to-value ratio to facilitate mortgage payments for homebuyers during the interest rate hike cycle. However, Singaporean authorities have implemented stricter rules for GCB acquisitions to prevent an uncontrollable rise in residential property prices.
