Category: RARE GEMS Taaffeite

Taaffeite gems were first discovered by Richard Taaffe in October 1945.

Some of the most attractive diamonds are formed by the process of earth’s recycling of carbon through tectonic plate movement leading to the formation of rare gemstones. During the process, the edge of one of the plates slides under the other that creates tremendous pressure and temperature conversions. There is no specific definition of the uncommonness but the ones endorsed by the renowned owners, or tested in the laboratory as chemically different are unparalleled creations. Taaffeite is one of the brightest and most beautiful discovered in Ireland in October 1945 by Richard Taaffe. The pretty gemstone can be in purple, mauve and red color, sometimes, mislabeled as a spinel. It is the only gemstone with faceted structure, and some of its types are identified as a spinel where the only difference is the double refraction.

The stone was acknowledged by B.W. Anderson of the Laboratory of London Chamber of Commerce as a distinct gemstone found in carbonate rocks with fluorite, tourmaline, mica, and spinel, or in the alluvial deposits in Sri Lanka and Southern Tanzania.

Although these are extraordinary, it can be found in the price range of $2000 to $35000 a carat. One of the largest pieces was 33.33 carats auctioned at Hong Kong in 1999. The colored gemstone is reminiscing and astonishing with stunning glow where the deep colors symbolize warmth and eternal youth. The hues and saturation can allure men and women and bestows fortunes to the owner.
